Perpetually Thankful

1 Thessalonians 5:18
“in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.

Throughout our lifetime, we face many trials. There are moments when we think to ourselves, could anything else go wrong? Sometimes it may feel like the whole world is against us, but we must remember the affirming words of Jesus in John 16:33. “In the world you will have trouble; but be of good cheer, for I have overcome the world.” Although it is almost always easier said than done, we are instructed alongside the church in Thessalonica to give thanks in everything. In every circumstance, whether it is hardship or blessing, loss or gain, difficult or effortless, there is a decision to be made. We don’t give thanks for everything but in everything, meaning we give thanks despite the difficult moments in life.

The beautiful reality is that it is God’s will for us to give thanks in everything. This does not mean we must give thanks, but that He has strengthened us to be able to. With the mindset of being content in all circumstances, Paul stated in Philippians 4:13, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” It is not easy to give thanks when life does not seem fair, but our gracious Lord has empowered His children with the ability to do so. When we give thanks, we find freedom to live in the grace of God. Let us be perpetually thankful, not because it is easy, but because it is His will for you and me today.
